Earth Oven Building Course

Working within the beautiful location of  community garden, Martineau Gardens, join Lizzy Bean for one of these three identical courses to learn how to build a wood-fired earth oven for your own back garden.

Spend the day in our beautiful community garden learning how to construct earth ovens for outdoor, wood-fired cooking. The course is very hands-on and you’ll gain the skills you need to build your own earth oven at home.

Building earth ovens is as simple as making a loaf of bread – you just need five ingredients, mud, sand, straw, water, and of course, time. You’ll not only build an earth oven in a day, but you’ll get to see the existing earth oven at Martineau in action too. Lizzy is a great teacher with a wealth of experience, having built dozens of earth ovens for schools, community projects, and in people’s homes.

This course is delivered by Earth Oven artist Lizzy Bean at Martineau Gardens . It is not fully catered, refreshments and a few treats from the earth oven will be provided but please bring a packed lunch along to sustain you as it’s hungry work building an oven!

  •      Identify a clay sub-soil
  •      Lay an oven floor using engineering bricks
  •      Identify sand types for use in earth ovens
  •      Gain practical experience of mixing cob
  •      Apply layers of cob to create the earth oven
  •      Measure and cut opening
  •                                                       Mix/sculpt final plaster layer to finish the oven

You will need to bring wellies for mixing cob and gardening/builders gloves or Marigold’s.”

The course runs from 10am – 4pm.
