Calendula (pot marigold) growing in the Herb Beds at Martineau Gardens

Calendula (pot marigold) growing in the Herb Beds at Martineau Gardens

Description: A basic introduction to some safe and effective home-grown herbal treatments for common domestic health problems.

Cost: £35 (no concessions)

We will cover the following aspects of six or so well-known and easily-grown herbs:

1) Basic planting considerations.

2) Close examination of the characteristics of each herb, discussing the main constituents and their medicinal actions (basic pharmacology), and their resulting health benefits.

3) Use of popular and reference books on herbal medicine to find out more information about the herbs (all books will be available for browsing over the lunch break. If you have any that you would like to add to the pool for the day please bring them, labelled with your name to make sure you get them back at the end).

4) Practical session: harvesting and preparing a tea of each herb.

5) Tea tasting

There will be some information on handouts, but everyone is welcome to ask questions or contribute their own experience and knowledge as well, so bring a notebook to cover this. It is essential for us to spend some time outdoors, so if the forecast is for rain, come with suitable coats and footwear. If there is any time left over after all this is finished we could cover another of the garden’s herbs, the group can choose which.

Taking place in the grounds of our beautiful community garden, Martineau Gardens, and led by retired Medical Herbalist, Nicola Peterson (National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH). Nicola now has more time to be involved in passing on some of the herbal knowledge acquired during her thirty-plus years as a practitioner.
